For the purpose of this post, I will limit the debate to good old fashioned rolled oats. You can buy your branded oats for $3.59 for 500g (72c per 100g) or buy generic oats for $1.19 for 750g (16c per 100g).
If you've ever been at the supermarket and actually compared the nutritional value between the two, there's barely any difference. So what's the difference between a branded oats and generic oats in this case? I'll tell you, 56c per 100g (a whooping 450% mark up!)
Supermarkets don't source their own products and usually the generic brands come out of the same factory as your branded ones. It's the same ingredients but without the fluff of attractive packaging. Oats are oats - whether they're Homebrand, Coles Brand, Aldi Brand or Brand Brand, they're still oats! Suck it up, don't be a brand snob. If it really bothers you, buy a box of the branded oats then after you've finished it, refill it up with the generic ones.
Saving money never goes out of fashion.
